What is GPT?

AI Writing Terms

GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a family of large language models developed by OpenAI. These models power ChatGPT, many AI writing tools, and countless applications that generate human-like text from prompts.

GPT models are among the most widely used LLMs for content creation, known for generating fluent, coherent text across diverse topics and formats. Different versions offer different capabilities: GPT-3.5 is faster and cheaper but less capable, GPT-4 is significantly more capable with better complex instruction following and higher quality output, and GPT-4o (optimized) balances speed and capability at GPT-4-level quality.

How GPT works for content creation

ChatGPT is OpenAI's direct interface to GPT models. Many specialized tools use GPT models through OpenAI's API - PostGenius, Jasper, Copy.ai and dozens of others build interfaces and workflows on top of GPT with specialized prompt engineering.

GPT models excel at generating fluent, natural-sounding text quickly and handling diverse topics with adaptable tone. They follow instructions relatively well (especially GPT-4) and can process substantial context windows, allowing you to provide detailed content briefs.

However, like all LLMs, GPT produces hallucinations - confident claims about things that aren't true. Always fact-check output. They have knowledge cutoff dates (GPT-4's training ends late 2023) and can sound generic or formulaic without good prompt engineering.

Using GPT for blog writing

GPT works well for generating blog post structures and first drafts. Give it a detailed content brief including keywords, structure, and key points, and it produces usable drafts.

However, raw GPT output rarely meets publication standards for helpful content. It lacks specific examples, personal insights, and the depth that comes from actual expertise. Treat it as a starting point requiring substantial editing through a human-in-the-loop workflow.

The best approach: use GPT to overcome blank page syndrome and generate structure, then add your expertise, examples, and unique perspective through editing. Alternatives like Claude (by Anthropic) often produce more nuanced writing and handle longer contexts, which many writers prefer for long-form content.
