What is a Sitemap?

Technical SEO

A sitemap is an XML file that lists all the important pages on your website, helping search engines discover and crawl your content more efficiently. It's essentially a roadmap of your site that you provide to Google and other search engines.

Your sitemap tells search engines which pages exist, when they were last updated, and how they relate to each other. This is especially useful for new sites, large sites, or pages that don't have many internal links pointing to them.

Why sitemap matters

While search engines can find most pages by following links, a sitemap ensures nothing gets missed. Pages buried deep in your site structure or recently published content might take longer to discover without a sitemap.

Submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console helps you monitor indexing status and identify any issues preventing pages from appearing in search results. You can see exactly which pages Google knows about and which it's having trouble accessing.

What to Include

Include all pages you want indexed: blog posts, main pages, category pages, and important resources. Exclude pages you don't want in search results, like admin pages, duplicate content, or thank-you pages.

Most blogging platforms and CMSs automatically generate and update your sitemap. WordPress plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math create sitemaps without any manual work required.

How to Use It

Find your sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. If you don't have one, install a plugin or check your platform's documentation on how to enable it.

Submit your sitemap through Google Search Console. Go to Sitemaps in the menu, enter your sitemap URL, and click submit. Google will start using it to find and index your pages more efficiently.

Update your sitemap whenever you publish new content. Most platforms do this automatically, but if you're managing it manually, keep it current to help search engines discover your latest posts quickly.
